About the Show

"In a World of...Improvised Movie Homages" is a performance podcast where we use short-form improv games to tell long-form improv stories in the style of famous movies.

Each episode is an homage to specific genre (or tight sub-genre, or even an example movie) and we begin each episode spending five minutes discussing the tropes, cliches, and commonalities of the genre.

Here's an example of the content discussion from our D&D/Fantasy movie themed episode, "Blossoming Necromancer":

Why to Contribute

So why would you want to contribute your expertise? Here a few reasons:

  1. It's fun! If you have been invited to contribute, then you must love this genre. Why wouldn't you want a chance to share your passion and expertise with a group that may not be familiar with you?
  2. We'll mention you and your show/site/group if we use your input or audio as part of the show.
  3. Even if we don't quote you on the show, we will include your info and post with a link back to your show/site/group in the show notes and on the episode web page.

How to Contribute

Contributing your ideas is simple! You can simply share your thoughts on the tropes of the genre AND/OR you can answer as many (or as few) of the sample questions below. To submit, you have three easy choices:

1) Record Your Thoughts Directly Online

This one is super simple! Just visit our recording page, click "Record," speak your thoughts into the computer, then enter your name and email to send. That's it! It should take less than 2 minutes

2) Set up a Quick Call

This one takes a little more coordination, but you can use this scheduling tool to set up a time for a 10 minute call with Avish. He will ask you questions about the movie/genre on a recorded call. The nice thing about this option is you don't have to plan at all - just show up and answer a few questions!

Prompting Questions

Sometimes it can be hard to just come up with "tropes and cliches"out of nothing. To help with that, here are some questions to get your mind going. Feel free to answer as many or as few of these as you find helpful, or just use them to get your mind going:

- How do these types of movies usually start?
- What personality traits/profession/backstory/etc. does the hero usually have?
- What is the villain typically like?
- What side characters commonly appear?
- Is there a type or twist that is common to this type of movie?
- What typically happens at the climax?
- What elements are usually parodied by other movies and tv shows?
- What cliches are overdone (kind of make you roll your eyes when they happen)?
- Are there any tropes that you recognize that maybe aren't so obvious to other people?
- What events/plot points MUST happen for you feel this truly a ____ type of movie?
